This tutorial was written for PSP9.

I have included lots of instructions and screen shots with the hope that anyone can do this
tutorial. I have most of my favorite effects on a tool bar but have included the path to each
effect so it will be easy to find them if you are new to PSP. If you are more advanced, feel
free to move ahead at your own pace ! Sorry, I can not offer help with Version 7 any longer.

This is an image I created for an e-contest long ago and the third in a series of "how you do
that?" Feel free to use any image you like, change the fonts and, of course, the text, too.
Giving this tutorial a name proved to be a challenge, It's a dark, moody image and you have to wonder
about the woman in the image. I think she is a "femme fatale" hence the name of this tut, "Film Noir Tag".

"Classic film noir developed during and after World War II, taking advantage of the post-war ambience of anxiety, pessimism, and suspicion. The earliest film noirs were detective thrillers, with plots and themes often taken from adaptations of literary works - preferably from best-selling, hard-boiled, pulp novels and crime fiction by Raymond Chandler, James M. Cain, Dashiell Hammett, or Cornell Woolrich. Very often, a film noir story was developed around a cynical, hard-hearted, disillusioned male character [e.g., Robert Mitchum, Fred MacMurray, or Humphrey Bogart] who encountered a beautiful but promiscuous, amoral, double-dealing and seductive femme fatale [e.g., Mary Astor, Veronica Lake, Jane Greer, Barbara Stanwyck, or Lana Turner]. She would use her feminine wiles and come-hither sexuality to manipulate him into becoming the fall guy - often following a murder. After a betrayal or double-cross, she was frequently destroyed as well, often at the cost of the hero's life. As women during the war period were given new-found independence and better job-earning power in the homeland during the war, they would suffer -- on the screen -- in these films of the 40s."

Paint Shop Pro 9, a 30 day trial can be downloaded here.
Filter Factory Q/Mosaic
These filters have been converted for use in PSP. You will need to make a new folder
named "Filter Factory Q" in your Plugins folder and unzip the files there.
The "filmnoirimage.jpg". The image will open in a new window, right click to
"Save picture as" and save to your pc. Open "filmnoirimage.jpg" in PSP.
The image compliments of Perfect People
The font Rivanna ~ it's listed at the bottom of the page.
Unzip the font, open and minimize them on your desktop.
Brushes used ~
My brush zip here.
Touchstone's Brushes
Click on " Resources" at the bottom of the page, then look in the window on the
right for the link to her brush page. I used Set 7, be sure to download the brushes for PSP8.
Unzip and Import the brushes in PSP. If you need help importing brushes I have a tut here.
The pattern tp_UrbanSchool.jpg here. Put this in your Patterns folder.

Before you get started, I have a page here with some of the results my dear friends at
PSPMadeEZ allowed me to share with you. I know you will enjoy seeing their creativity!


Let's get started ...
Go to Layers/Duplicate.
Effects/Plugins/Filter Factory Q/Mosaic with these settings ..
Nose 13, Amount 139.
Go to Effects/Distortion Effects/Pixelate
Block width and height 13.
In your Layer palette change the Blend mode to Hard Light and lower the Opacity to 80.

Go to Effects/Texture Effects/Blinds
Width 15, Opacity 5, Color Black. Check Horizontal and Light from left/top.
Here's what you should have now ..

Using your Eraser Tool with these settings ..

erase the areas within the selection below ..

Using your Selection tool , Rectangle, Add(Shift)/Feather 0, Anti-alias checked
draw out a selection like below .. it includes 4 of the horizontal stripes

Go to Edit/Copy, Selections/Select None, Edit Paste as a new layer.
Image/Rotate/Free Rotate/Left/90%/Uncheck "All layers" and "Rotate single layer around canvas center".
In your Layer Palette change the bland mode to Hard light and lower the Opacity to 80.

Using your Eraser tool , same settings as before, erase the stripes from her hands, the left side
of the chair and all of her dress. Erase about half the stripe on the right side of the chair.

Go to Layers/New Raster Layer. In your Materials Palette change the foreground color to Pattern and
find tp_UrbanSchool, Angle 0, Scale 100 and Flood Fill your layer. Change your Blend Mode to Soft Light and
using your Easer Tool erase the pattern from the woman and the chair.

Duplicate this layer, change the Blend mode to Multiply and lower the Opacity to 70.
You may have some of the pattern fill showing on the lady after you change the blend mode,
use your eraser and erase any of the pattern you see left on her.
Go to Layers/New Raster Layer. Using your Paintbrush tool find gh_flowerspray,
size 250, step 32, density 100, rotation 180, opacity 100.
Change your foreground color to #8b4217 and apply your brush by clicking twice in
the lower right corner, like below ..
{If you don't see the brush outline, go to File/Preferences/General Program
Preferences. Click on the Display and Caching tab and check Show brush outlines.}


Change your Foreground color to black.
Change the brush size to 150 and apply your brush three times,
scattering them over the area of the first brush application.

Layers/New Raster Layer and using your Paintbrush again, find
07Touchstone 004, size 500, color #8b4217.
Apply like below ..

Change the Blend mode to Multiply and lower the Opacity to 58.
Erase the brush from the selection area.

Layers/New Raster Layer. Using your paintbrush find gh_plumerias, size 175.
Change your foreground color to Black and apply the brush, clicking twice in the lower left corner.

Foreground color Black, background color off,
using your Preset Shape tool with these settings ...

Watch your status bar (bottom right corner) and starting at x:6 y:6 draw out a rectangle
to x:394 y:394 making a dotted border around the image.
Add two more boxes like below ...

Layers/New Raster Layer. Using your paintbrush find gh_text1, size 160, color #8b4217.
Aapply the brush twice in the upper box. Add a drop shadow, Effects/3D Effects/Drop Shadow
Vertical and Horizontal 1, Opacity 100, Blur 2 and Color Black. Repeat the drop shadow again with
the same settings.

Using your text tool with these settings

Make your Foreground color #00000 and Background color #bf5d21 and add your text to the bottom box.
Go to your layer palette, right click on your text layer and "Convert to Raster Layer".
Go to Selections/Select All, Selections/Float, Selections/Modify/Contract 1.
Go to Effects/3D Effects/Inner Bevel. Choose "Bevel One" , width 1,
Smoothness 32, Depth 1, Ambience 0, Shininess 44, Angle 315, Intensity 39 and Elevation 36.
Go to Selections/Select None.

For the drop shadow go to Effects/3D Effects/Drop Shadow with these settings .....
Vertical 2, Horizontal 1, Opacity 65, Blur 5 and Color #000000 (black)
Add a new raster layer for your watermark, save as a .jpg and you are done.
